ahhh, on sat the 19th, ill be leaving for vacation with my brother and sis-in-law to go up to nisswa, mn. to the good old days resort. its the first real vacation ive taken since jamaica in 2005. it may not seem like a big deal, but im leaving nana for other people to care for her. even 3 years ago she was more self sufficient than now. we have our routine and shes used to it, so im gonna try my best to keep that on track even though it will take 3 people. i just went out to say goodnight and take her fresh water and her sleeping pill and she said to me, "i dont know what im gonna do without you here." THAT tugged at my heart, because most of the time i dont really feel like she cares....and that tells me she does. now i have to try and not feel guilty for leaving her. you all have no idea how much i need this time away. my sis (kris) and family from houston will be there. kev and julies mom and dad and abbie (niece) and her husband from eagle, co, chad (nephew) and hollie and their 3 kids from witchita falls...anyway, it should be good times...i just hope i dont drink too much and take a long walk off a short pier...

i dont even know where to start. last week was a bad dream, but very real. i guess we were one of the lucky ones and i use the term lightly. we live on the bank of the cedar river in cedar terrace addition in waterloo...there has never been any water, in the house, to speak of in the 45 years the house has been built. this time...although the water never actually came up to the house, (thank goodness for the 4 ft tall wall of sandbags) but in the span of 6 hours the basement went from an inch of water to 2 feet overnight. it was weird, but when we were told to evacuate, it was the eve before the morning of the crest, so no one as far as we know left. if you were paying attention to the news at all...the fact that the worst was over was enough for us to stay and tough it out. needless to say, it was a restless night trying to sleep and not because the river was 15 feet from my window, but mostly because of the noise of the rushing water...so LOUD!!! we never lost power, although 6 houses down lost ALL utilities for 5 days, but with a dry basement.(we had the gas turned off for 4 days) our water was coming in thru the bottom step of the basement. i suppose with all the sandy saturated ground. anyway...so far weve had to get a new water heater...im keeping my fingers crossed on the washer, dryer, and furnace. today crandall construction came and started to strip the basement...it was pretty emotional and i was at my breaking point by 6. they had to go, i had to have time to digest it all. now most of it is in the front yard...what next? tomorrow the carpeting and paneling will come off and the drying process will begin...ill let you know how all that goes...all i can see is $$$, with nothing covered in household insurance so far. just poke my eyes out now.

ive been trying to plan a much needed vacation for me this summer. the only problem was in trying to find a nana-sitter so that i could feel halfway confident being gone for 10 days. jon will be here, but hell be working and isnt the most attentive. anyway, this morning the gal thats been doing her hair for 20ish years came over and i asked her if she could help out by coming over at least once a day. her vacation is the first week of july and mine is the middle to end, so she said "sure"! so yay! now i can have some away time for the first time since jamaica.

its been a different summer break at our house. jon is here (well, mostly hes not) and davey is still living down in iowa city. yesterday davey came back for a dentist appointment before he starts his summer class next week. and jon, well, he mostly stays out all night and then sleeps all day. that however, will stop tomorrow though, because he starts work at lost island and also starts an online class on monday. while davey was here yesterday he decided to fix his back brakes...well, that was good because he saved me probably $150 by doing them himself...but then i took him grocery shopping this evening before he left town and spent at least that much. hmmm....
